I have invested a lot of time and effort over the years on keeping my blades 'scary sharp'. Being a blade junkie my whole life, I have learned of many systems and even more gadgets that accomplish that type of edges I desire on a knife. I have my certain tastes and blade angles that work well for me. I have relied on the Spyderco Sharpmaker as the go to easy to fine tune system for over a year. It will not aggressively re-shape a blade angle without a lot of effort but the ceramic rod system puts a hair poppin edge on the majority of knives I have. I have become interested again is checking out whats available in the Japanese whetstones and different grit grades available. I will probably purchase a fine to extra fine whetstone because I have plenty of DMT diamond stones and medium ceramic rods and other stones to fill the gap. And it's time to get back to basics, using the time tested whetstone sharpening stones.

I'll continue to update this thread as I research and then purchase the Japanese whetstones and look forward to getting some of my kitchen knives to the test. I have several
santoku, chef, boning, knives that are less than $100 that will make great candidates. The more expensive knives have a great edge but I will eventually bring them to the whetstone, just not as first testers.
